Talbot Forest grenst aan het plaatsje Geraldine, in het midden van Canterbury. Vóór dat de mens zich hier vestigde, was het land bedekt met gras en bossen. Helaas zijn er nog maar kleine stukjes van dat bos bewaard gebleven. Talbot Forest beschermt ongeveer 28 hectare grotendeels gemengd “podocarp” bos. Er zijn korte gemarkeerde wandelroutes, toiletten en picknick-tafels. De Talbot Forest Working Group heeft als doel mee te werken aan de bescherming van Talbot Forest Scenic Reserve. Deze organisatie is in 1997 opgericht naar aanleiding van publiek overleg georganiseerd door de Forest and Bird Society en de Geraldine Community Board. Tijdens deze meeting hebben experts uitgelegd dat Talbot Forest te klein is om te gedijen zonder de inbreng van de gemeenschap. Het is o.a. belangrijk om doorgangen van inheemse begroeiing te creëren die het wild aanmoedigen naar Talbot Forest te gaan. Het bos is immers een eiland omgeven door landbouw en bebouwing. Verder kunnen onkruiden vanuit de nabijgelegen tuinen een bedreiging voor het gebied vormen. The Conservation Department has upgraded the Tripp St picnic area in Talbot Forest, Geraldine, with a new road, parking, drainage and earthworks. New lawns will be sown from mid-March, with picnic tables to follow. This area will be completed with the planting of large areas of native vegetation. "We are now turning our attentions toward the Totara St picnic area," DOC project manager Carl Jones said. "Following consultation with the Talbot Forest Working Group and Timaru District Council, designs are currently being drafted to remove the central vehicle entrance and access road as this has very poor visibility for visitors." The remaining vehicle entrance, near the junction with Davies St, will be widened and a small car park developed. "We also plan to restore native forest to much of the open space," Mr Jones said. The design for the area includes creating a smaller area of open space with picnic tables placed to take advantage of the views. The Kahikatea Track will be extended through the new forest planting to connect with the new play space and car park. It is hoped work at Totara St will start in April and that planting in both picnic areas will take place in August.
